BC Healthy Communities/BC Housing
A Sustainable Community Development Initiative
Energy conservation, waste reduction and food security are sustainability goals that BC Housing shares with municipalities and several organizations (e.g. non-for-profits, community centres, etc.) in the neighbourhoods where high density social housing sites exist in the Lower Mainland. BC Housing would like to explore a collaborative ‘win-win-win’ initiative whereby tenants of social housing are supported to reduce energy, waste and/or increase their food security, a municipal partner makes progress towards achieving their community development and sustainability objectives in a particular neighbourhood, and non-profit partners can make their community more inclusive to all residents, including those living in social housing. The SFU Surrey-TD CEC has played a vital role in connecting this project to internal SFU resources for support such as the Centre for Sustainable Community Development, SFU Enactus, and SFPIRG.
